Registering, Indexing and Digitizing of the Women’s Archive's Collections (since 1978) at Ruhr-University Bochum

  • Project duration: 01.04.2022 – 31.12.2022

Founded in 1978, Ruhr University’s feminist archive LISELLE collected and archived large amounts of material. Until now, a vast number of archival materials is still not properly registered.  Consequently, registering, indexing and digitizing the collection can significantly contribute to intersectional research and research in the fields of Gender History, Gender Studies, Queer Studies, Empowerment Studies and Protest Research.

The project focusses on on Latin American and Caribbean material and therefore concentrates on a 20 shelf-metre stock of journals to be listed in various catalogues (META, ZDB).  However, we will also address regional journals like the Dortmunder Frauenzeitung Igitte, Ruberta or Kalodrama. Eventually, we plan to digitize selected archival material which will be published in the Digital Women’s Archive (DDF) in order to make it publicly available to an interested public.

The project takes place within the framework of the Digital German Women’s Archive (DDF). Read the blog post of the DDF.

Women’s Library LIESELLE

In 1978, the Women’s Archive at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum was founded as an autonomous women’s lesbian project by a group of history students. From its beginnings to the present day, the Women’s Archive (today’s LIESELLE Women’s Library) has collected a collection of books and media about 7,500 data sets. Numerous previously unrecorded archival holdings as well as movement periodicals with a national and Ruhr area-specific focus are still in LIESELLE’s holdings. The Women’s Library can look back on a history that has lasted for more than 40 years and is therefore one of the oldest institutions in the umbrella association (the umbrella association of German-speaking women/lesbian archives, libraries and documentation centres).
