Both, the Ph.D.-programme and B.Sc.-Ph.D.-programme start on the 1st of October each year. Apart from the research work the programmes include research-oriented courses, science related courses, and general courses.

Mentors will monitor the student's academic progress, offer guidance and support in all questions regarding the course programme and scientific work.

Ph.D.-programme

The Ph.D. in Neuroscience is based on completion of graduate course work, qualifying examination, research, and a dissertation and defense.

Apart from the research work the academic programme includes the participation in several courses. During the six semesters, the curriculum comprises the lecture "From Molecules to Cognition", lab rotations, practical and methodological courses, seminars, journal clubs, and soft skills (like presentation and management skills). All courses will be held in English and to an extent can be structured individually.

Each student has an individual advisory committee consisting of the thesis supervisor and one additional advisors. The committee will advise, guide, and support the candidate in all aspects of academic progress.

B.Sc.-Ph.D.-programme

The IGSN also offers a one year graduation phase for candidates having a B.Sc. or equivalent degree. After successful completion of four intensive practical courses, seminars, and a qualifying examination, students will have the opportunity to enter the Ph.D.-programme directly.

Each student has an individual advisory committee consisting of the supervisor and one additional advisors in the first year graduation phase. The committee will advise, guide, support, and examine the candidate in all aspects of academic progress.

MD-Programme

In cooperation with the Collaborative Research Center 874, the IGSN also offers a one-year auxiliary training programme for medical students of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum who are interested in conducting an experimental MD-project with a neuroscientific focus.

MD students take part in the IGSN's graduate school programme. The curriculum comprises state-of-the-art symposia, methodological and practical courses, journal clubs, lab meetings and a lecture course. A credit point system allows the MD students to monitor their progress during the course of the programme. After completing their MD at the medical faculty of the RUB, successful alumni of the MD programme receive a certificate.

The MD projects are thematically embedded within the projects of the SFB 874 and they are supervised by the SFB's principal investigators. The faculties of Medicine, Psychology and Biology take part in the programme. For more information about the programme, scholarships and MD projects, please click here.
