Teaching Program for History, Culture, and Languages of Taiwan
Since spring 2019, the project „A Teaching Program for History, Culture, and
Languages of Taiwan” is being conducted at the Faculty of East Asian Studies of
Ruhr University Bochum.
The project is being generously supported by the Taiwan Ministry of Education. In this program, scholars from universities and research institutes in Taiwan are invited to teach courses on the anthropology, social and economic history, linguistics and languages of Taiwan at the Faculty of East Asian Studies of Ruhr University Bochum.
The Research Unit for Taiwanese Culture and Literature coordinates the curriculum.

Welcome TAP!
The German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has awarded a grant to four post-doc researchers to conduct the joint research program TAP (Taiwan as a Pioneer) for a duration of four years. Bochum is one of the participating centers for Taiwan studies in Germany, next to Trier and Tübingen. In Bochum the program will be directed by Dr. Chien Hung-yi 簡宏逸. It will start on 1 February 2022.

BA Seminar: Taiwan 1600-1895: Quellen und heutige Rezeption / Taiwan 1600-1895: Sources and Contemporary Perception
Teachers: Professor Christine Moll-Murata, with guest professors Dr. Chien Hung-yi (TAP) and Prof. Dr. Lin Hsin-yi (National Taiwan Normal University)
Time: Wednesdays, 14-16 h
Course information:This seminar is dedicated to the political and social history of Taiwan during the seventeenth through the nineteenth centuries, starting from the early colonial period and the subsequent inclusion of Taiwan into the Qing empire. The focus will be on the mid nineteenth century, on the coexistence and conflicts among the Taiwanese population and on the struggles with foreign powers. As a special feature, guest professors Dr. Chien Hung-yi will give two lectures on the seventeenth century, and we will invite Professor Lin Hsin-yi to present her view on the mid-nineteenth century. We will show excerpts of the 2021 TV series Sequalu: Formosa 1867 (斯卡羅), and Prof. Lin will discuss the perception of the series, the presentation of the history of Taiwan in the media, and the memories of the colonial official Charles Le Gendre, one of the important figures during this time.
The film show will be open to the public.

Course information: This is a tutorial for Elementary Tâi-gí (Taiwanese Holo Language). It is intended for practice of pronounciation and conversation.
